Altus not so good poncho

In 2021 and 2022 I walked the French way and had no need of my poncho. In October this year I walked the Portuguese way and unfortunately experienced my first Camino in the rain. I was expecting great things from my Altus poncho as I had read how good they were but I am afraid to say on the three days I needed it I got drenched through. I don’t know what else I can say except I was surprised and disappointed.

Great Poncho

I am 6'1" (185cm) and find the M/L to be sufficiently large and long over a 38L Osprey Kestrel backpack.. I used this poncho on a recent Via Francigena walk and found the possibility to leave the front zip open and just use the various velcro tabs to regulate cooling a bonus. It is possible to unhook your arms and leave the poncho hooked safely over the backpack to allow it to dry and keep ready for immediate reuse. It is not a light or small item when packed at 350g and 8cm Dia x 18cm when packed into it's drawstring bag but it keeps you very dry and does not flap in the wind like a shopping bag. Only downside is the lack of underarm vents and the elasticated cuffs meaning that you get sweat pooling in the arms.
