Welcome to El Camino that leads from the foothills of the Pyrenees in France to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia – a distance of 791 km (490 miles). During the past ten years the Camino has witnessed an amazing revival to regain its place as the most popular Christian pilgrim route in the world – but this is no modern fad for this ancient path has been transforming lives for more than ten centuries. In recognition of, “The testimony to the power of faith and the 1,800 buildings of great historic interest that lie along its path” it was proclaimed the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987 and inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.

288 pages paperback in full colour including:

  • Overview route planner
  • 33 daily stage maps showing optional routes
  • 33 Contour guides List of pilgrim hostels and alternative accommodation
  • 14 Town plans
  • Practical notes on preparation including Equipment and clothing checklist Dictionary with basic pilgrim phrases
  • Historical notes and places of special interest.

In addition to the physical route there are pointers to:

  • the Mystical path with Inspirational quotations space for Personal reflections
  • and a Self-assessment questionnaire to help prepare for the inner journey.

All this designed to fit easily into your pocket. The guide is now smaller than previous editions and designed to fit easily into your pocket measuring only 12cm x 19cm and weighing a mere 287 grams.

First published as A Pilgrim's Guide to Camino de Santiago in 2003 these popular guides are regularly updated.

Walked by millions over the millennia the Camino de Santiago represents a major force for spiritual renewal and transformation. In the spaciousness of the Landscape Temple we walk through we become open and receptive to the wisdom that is in us and around us. When we step beyond the habitual judgments and expectations that confine us, we become ready to expand, to change and to grow. With an appreciation for what the path shows us, the growing becomes joyful adventure.

There are thousands of long distance pathways we can walk but only the Camino has achieved world recognition for its historical and spiritual significance and, inevitably, such accolades bring greater numbers wishing to experience its healing potential. Although numbers have increased tenfold during the past ten years, this is still less than half the estimated pilgrims that walked the Camino each year during the medieval period. Perhaps now is your time?

Brierley's 2024 edition

Referring to the byline on the cover, the Brierley's 2024 edition is an updated, excellent mix of "Practical" information & "Mystical" thoughts for those interested in The Way of St. James. Extended cover flaps afford space for overview maps as well as serving as handy and effective bookmarks. The guide provides essential information relating to all aspects of preparation, including weather, gear, packing, language, expectations, and experiences. The guide details include color-keyed alternates and options along the way, and detailed information and references for accommodations and meals. The guide is richly illustrated with color photos of various sizes of key places, and color-keyed, icon-rich, topographic maps of segments as well as various villages and towns of note along the Camino. All in all, the guide is comprehensive and inspiring. It can fit into most back pockets and weighs 270g / 9-1/2 oz. In my opinion, this guide is excellent for anyone considering the Camino de Francés or preparing for it. It is tempting to take along, but only for those who can tolerate the extra weight, and then best used in the evenings in preparation for the next day. However, there are several effective apps for your Smartphone that can provide near instant and real-time access to exactly the information desired at the very moment including your GPS position on a zoomable map, access to booking by phone or on-line, and similar information or links to more detail or websites while you are on the Camino. But the value of a physical book for the processes of consideration, preparation, annotation, sharing, and passing along cannot be matched by any app.
