Overview

This guidebook describes the Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo pilgrim routes to Santiago do Compostela in northwest Spain. The 820km Camino del Norte follows the coast from Irún, on the French border, and takes about 5 weeks to complete. The 355km Camino Primitivo splits off from the Camino del Norte near Villaviciosa and passes through Oviedo and Lugo en route to Compostela. It takes roughly 2 weeks to walk. This book also includes an overview of a continuation route from Santiago to Finisterre. Physically demanding, but not difficult, the caminos are best walked from in late spring to autumn.

The guidebook is broken into stages of between 15 and 35km, most of which end in a town or village with a pilgrim albergue. There is indispensable information on facilities, food and lodging, 1:1000 scale maps of the route and town maps for key locations. With notes on preparation and planning, travel and equipment, a list of useful sources of information, and a glossary, the book provides all you need to know to walk the camino.

Santiago de Compostela, whose cathedral houses the relics of St James, was one of three major centres of Catholic pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. In modern times the Caminos de Santiago have seen a resurgence in popularity, drawing walkers for all sorts of reasons. Passing through the Spanish regions of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia, the northern caminos are popular enough to offer sufficient facilities, clear routes, and a community of pilgrims, without suffering the overcrowding of the Camino Frances.

It took a long time to arrive, but in the end it was worth the wait

I bought these for my Caminos in September 2021. The books seem full of content and details. The true test will be in using them to complete my Camino. I email Ivar when I did not receive the material in a couple weeks. He promptly responded and a few days later the books arrived. Shipping is slow as a result of the pandemic. Glad I purchased through Ivar!

When you can't go to the Camino

I used the Cicerone guide to the The Camino Portugués when I walked from Santarém to Oporto earlier this year. I purchased it as an ebook as it was too heavy to carry. Cicerone Guides are great, informative and have gotten me back from a few alternative paths that I've ended up following. As I'm now grounded the guide to the Del Norte and Primitivo will have to do. Whilst it's not the same as walking, this guide can give you a great sense of what to expect and help you plan your next Camino when we're all on the other side of this. Ivar posted this promptly, but with the dreaded Carona it took a while to get to me, so when you can't go to the Camino go to teh Camino Forum Shop. Buen Camino

Northern caminok

A good book small and light with all the info you need

Great book to support my research

The book has great maps, splitting the different legs is helpful for the planning. And very speedy delivery!

mixed feelings

I have always been satisfied with the services of the Camino Forum, however as far as the book is concerned I was disappointed. To start with, -very heavy, with no elevation charts, and the maps might be nice as far as graphic design is concerned but not for the Camino. My free apps were much more helpful.

Just what I was looking for:

Still doing the planning for the Norte, but walked the stage from Pasaia to San Sebastián in July. Maps and info are very accurate and concise. No extra gobbilty **** you don't need. It is small and light but offers all you need to know for a successful, enjoyable Camino.

Concerned

We received the book in due time however, we had requested and paid for a second credential and it was not included in our package. I wrote you an email but never received a response. Having said that, the book appears to be very useful and we are looking forward to our next Camino in October

Thank's Ivar. Exellent store.

Have studied the routes and etapas so far. The Camino itself starts next month.
